Breaking Patterns

Breaking Patterns

We are all raised inside patterns.

Some are obvious. Some are so deeply woven into us that we don't recognize them as patterns at all. They just feel like the way things are.

How we behave.
What we tolerate.
What we believe we are supposed to want.
How hard we think we have to work to be worthy.
Whether we ask for what we need or quietly make do.
Whether we follow our own instincts or look around to see what everyone else is doing first.

We inherit so much without realizing it.

And for a long time, I think many of us mistake familiarity for truth.

Breaking those patterns can be incredibly difficult because the familiar can feel safe, even when it isn't making us happy. There is comfort in knowing the rules. There is comfort in being the person everyone already understands.

Changing means becoming unfamiliar to yourself, too.

It means questioning things you were taught to accept. It means disappointing people sometimes. It means letting go of identities that once served you. And sometimes it means admitting that the life you worked very hard to create isn't the life you want anymore.

That part can be painful.

But there is something extraordinary that happens when you begin choosing differently.

You start to hear your own voice again.

Maybe you work less. Maybe you want less. Maybe you stop explaining yourself. Maybe you finally pursue something you've been putting off for years. Maybe you realize that success doesn't have to look the way you were taught it should.

The reward isn't always immediate.

Sometimes breaking a pattern feels like losing everything before it feels like gaining anything.

But eventually, something opens up.

There is more room.

More curiosity. More freedom. More possibility.

And perhaps most importantly, there is the quiet realization that you are allowed to decide what comes next.

We don't get to choose everything we were given.

But we do get to decide what we carry forward.
