THE DISINHERITED

My first word was move.
Maybe that should have told us everything.
Because we inherit things.
Names.
Rules.
Beliefs.
Fears.
Ways of behaving.
Ways of belonging.
We inherit the script
before we ever learn
we have a choice.
But we do.
We can look at what was handed down
and say—
this.
I'll keep this.
And—
this?
No.
I'll leave that here.
Because inheritance
isn't just what you're given.
It's what you choose to carry.
And I chose.
I chose the voice.
The eye.
The instinct.
The strange way of seeing
around the edges of things.
I chose movement.
Move.
That was always the answer.
Not because I didn't belong.
Because I understood
that belonging
doesn't have to mean
becoming the thing
you inherited.
Sometimes you inherit a script.
Sometimes you inherit a silence.
Sometimes you inherit a whole set
of rules nobody remembers
agreeing to.
You also inherit the right
to walk away from all of it.
So yes.
Disinherited.
Not rejected.
Not ruined.
Just selective.
I kept what was mine.
I left the rest.
And somewhere along the way,
I realized—
I was never meant
to inherit the life
someone else had written.
